Der erste Tag in Köln

Es ist Montag. Der Flug von Istanbul nach Köln ist lang. Deniz sitzt im Flugzeug. Er hört Musik und trinkt Wasser. Er ist sehr müde, aber er ist auch glücklich. Heute beginnt sein neues Leben in Deutschland.

It is Monday. The flight from Istanbul to Cologne is long. Deniz is sitting on the plane. He is listening to music and drinking water. He is very tired, but he is also happy. Today his new life in Germany begins.

Der Flug hat eine Nummer: LH eins, drei, acht, sieben. Deniz sagt die Nummer oft. Eins, drei, acht, sieben. Die Zahlen sind neu für ihn. Er will sie gut lernen, denn er braucht die Zahlen jeden Tag.

The flight has a number: LH one, three, eight, seven. Deniz says the number often. One, three, eight, seven. The numbers are new for him. He wants to learn them well, because he needs the numbers every day.

Um zehn Uhr landet das Flugzeug. Deniz geht durch den Flughafen und sucht seinen Koffer. Der Koffer ist groß und schwer. Dann geht er nach draußen. Da steht ein Mann mit einem Schild. Auf dem Schild steht ein Name: Deniz.

At ten o'clock the plane lands. Deniz walks through the airport and looks for his suitcase. The suitcase is big and heavy. Then he goes outside. There stands a man with a sign. On the sign there is a name: Deniz.

Deniz: „Hallo! Ich glaube, das ist mein Name."

Deniz: "Hello! I think that's my name."

Lukas: „Hallo! Bist du Deniz?"

Lukas: "Hello! Are you Deniz?"

Deniz: „Ja, ich bin Deniz. Und wie heißt du?"

Deniz: "Yes, I'm Deniz. And what's your name?"

Lukas: „Ich heiße Lukas. Lukas Weber. Ich bin dein Mitbewohner."

Lukas: "My name is Lukas. Lukas Weber. I'm your flatmate."

Deniz: „Sehr schön! Ich freue mich."

Deniz: "Very nice! I'm glad."

Lukas: „Ich mich auch. Wie geht es dir?"

Lukas: "Me too. How are you?"

Deniz: „Danke, gut. Aber ich bin sehr müde."

Deniz: "Thanks, good. But I'm very tired."

Lukas: „Das verstehe ich. Der Flug ist lang, oder?"

Lukas: "I understand that. The flight is long, right?"

Deniz: „Ja. Von Istanbul nach Köln sind es drei Stunden. Aber ich kann im Flugzeug nicht schlafen."

Deniz: "Yes. From Istanbul to Cologne it's three hours. But I can't sleep on the plane."

Lukas: „Woher kommst du genau?"

Lukas: "Where exactly do you come from?"

Deniz: „Ich komme aus Istanbul. Und du? Wo wohnst du?"

Deniz: "I come from Istanbul. And you? Where do you live?"

Lukas: „Ich wohne hier in Köln. Ich wohne schon zehn Jahre hier. Und jetzt wohnen wir zusammen."

Lukas: "I live here in Cologne. I've lived here for ten years already. And now we live together."

Deniz: „Das finde ich sehr gut."

Deniz: "I think that's very good."

Lukas nimmt den Koffer. Beide gehen langsam durch den Flughafen. Alle sprechen Deutsch, und alle sprechen sehr schnell.

Lukas takes the suitcase. Both of them walk slowly through the airport. Everyone speaks German, and everyone speaks very fast.

Lukas: „Sag mal, wie alt bist du?"

Lukas: "Tell me, how old are you?"

Deniz: „Ich bin achtundzwanzig. Und wie alt bist du?"

Deniz: "I'm twenty-eight. And how old are you?"

Lukas: „Ich bin dreißig. Ich bin also zwei Jahre älter."

Lukas: "I'm thirty. So I'm two years older."

Deniz: „Zwei Jahre sind nicht viel."

Deniz: "Two years isn't much."

Lukas: „Nein, das ist nicht viel. Arbeitest du? Oder lernst du?"

Lukas: "No, that's not much. Do you work? Or are you studying?"

Deniz: „Beides. Ich lerne Deutsch, und dann will ich hier arbeiten. In Istanbul habe ich vier Jahre in einem Büro gearbeitet."

Deniz: "Both. I'm learning German, and then I want to work here. In Istanbul I worked in an office for four years."

Lukas: „Ah, ich arbeite auch in einem Büro! Wir beide arbeiten also im Büro."

Lukas: "Ah, I work in an office too! So we both work in an office."

Deniz: „Ist die Arbeit gut?"

Deniz: "Is the work good?"

Lukas: „Die Arbeit ist gut, aber mein Chef ist manchmal schlecht. Er fragt zu viel und er hört nicht."

Lukas: "The work is good, but my boss is bad sometimes. He asks too much and he doesn't listen."

Deniz: „Das verstehe ich. Chefs fragen oft und hören nie."

Deniz: "I understand that. Bosses often ask and never listen."

Lukas: „Genau! Du verstehst mich schon sehr gut. Sag mal, ich brauche deine Telefonnummer. Kannst du sie mir bitte sagen?"

Lukas: "Exactly! You already understand me very well. Say, I need your phone number. Can you tell it to me, please?"

Deniz: „Ja, gerne. Meine Nummer ist null, eins, sechs, eins — dann zwei, drei, vier — dann fünf, sechs, sieben."

Deniz: "Yes, gladly. My number is zero, one, six, one — then two, three, four — then five, six, seven."

Lukas: „Langsam, bitte! Kannst du das noch einmal sagen?"

Lukas: "Slowly, please! Can you say that once more?"

Deniz: „Natürlich. Null, eins, sechs, eins. Dann zwei, drei, vier. Dann fünf, sechs, sieben."

Deniz: "Of course. Zero, one, six, one. Then two, three, four. Then five, six, seven."

Lukas: „Jetzt habe ich sie. Und hier ist meine Nummer: null, eins, sieben, neun — elf, zwölf, dreizehn."

Lukas: "Now I have it. And here is my number: zero, one, seven, nine — eleven, twelve, thirteen."

Deniz: „Elf, zwölf, dreizehn? Das ist einfach. Elf, zwölf, dreizehn."

Lukas: „Ja, sehr einfach. So kann ich die Nummer auch nicht vergessen. Komm, das Auto steht dort."

Nach vierzig Minuten sind sie in der Stadt. Deniz schaut aus dem Fenster. Die Stadt ist groß und alt. Er sieht Häuser, Menschen, Fahrräder und einen Fluss.

After forty minutes they are in the city. Deniz looks out of the window. The city is big and old. He sees houses, people, bicycles and a river.

Deniz: „Die Stadt ist schön. Wie viele Menschen wohnen hier?"

Deniz: "The city is beautiful. How many people live here?"

Lukas: „Eine Million. Köln ist groß, aber nicht zu groß."

Lukas: "One million. Cologne is big, but not too big."

Deniz: „Und der Dom? Ich möchte den Dom sehen."

Deniz: "And the cathedral? I'd like to see the cathedral."

Lukas: „Der Dom ist dort. Er ist sehr alt und sehr groß. Wir gehen morgen dorthin, wenn du willst."

Lukas: "The cathedral is over there. It's very old and very big. We'll go there tomorrow if you want."

Deniz: „Ja, gerne. Ich will alles sehen."

Deniz: "Yes, gladly. I want to see everything."

Das Auto hält. Lukas macht die Tür auf.

The car stops. Lukas opens the door.

Lukas: „So, hier ist es. Gartenstraße vierzehn."

Lukas: "So, here it is. Gartenstraße fourteen."

Deniz: „Vierzehn? Ich muss die Hausnummer lernen. Gartenstraße vierzehn."

Deniz: "Fourteen? I have to learn the house number. Gartenstraße fourteen."

Lukas: „Genau. Das Haus ist alt, aber die Wohnung ist neu. Das ist gut, oder?"

Lukas: "Exactly. The house is old, but the flat is new. That's good, right?"

Deniz: „Das ist sehr gut. Wie viele Stockwerke hat das Haus?"

Deniz: "That's very good. How many floors does the house have?"

Lukas: „Vier. Wir wohnen im dritten Stock."

Lukas: "Four. We live on the third floor."

Deniz: „Gibt es einen Aufzug?"

Deniz: "Is there a lift?"

Lukas: „Nein, einen Aufzug gibt es hier nicht. Aber das ist kein Problem. Wir sind jung."

Lukas: "No, there's no lift here. But that's no problem. We're young."

Deniz: „Wie viele Stufen sind es?"

Deniz: "How many steps are there?"

Lukas: „Fünfzehn, dann noch fünfzehn, dann noch fünfzehn. Zusammen fünfundvierzig."

Deniz: „Fünfundvierzig Stufen mit einem Koffer! Ich brauche Wasser."

Sie gehen nach oben. Deniz zählt die Stufen: eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn. Dann noch fünf. Er ist müde, aber er lacht. Oben macht Lukas die Tür auf.

They go upstairs. Deniz counts the steps: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Then five more. He is tired, but he laughs. Upstairs Lukas opens the door.

Lukas: „Dies ist der Flur. Da rechts ist die Küche. Und hier ist dein Zimmer."

Deniz: „Wie viele Zimmer hat die Wohnung?"

Deniz: "How many rooms does the flat have?"

Lukas: „Vier Zimmer. Dein Zimmer, mein Zimmer, das Wohnzimmer und die Küche. Das Bad ist klein, aber es geht."

Lukas: "Four rooms. Your room, my room, the living room and the kitchen. The bathroom is small, but it's fine."

Deniz: „Mein Zimmer ist groß!"

Deniz: "My room is big!"

Lukas: „Es ist nicht klein, das stimmt. Zwanzig Quadratmeter. Da ist ein Bett, ein Tisch und ein Stuhl."

Lukas: „Natürlich dürfen deine Freunde kommen. Das ist auch dein Haus."

Lukas: "Of course your friends may come. This is your home too."

Deniz: „Danke, Lukas. Ah, eine Frage: Wie ist das WLAN? Ich brauche das WLAN."

Deniz: "Thank you, Lukas. Ah, one question: what's the WiFi? I need the WiFi."

Lukas: „Das WLAN heißt Weber. Und das Passwort ist lang: Koeln, dann sechzehn, siebzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn."

Um zwölf Uhr klingelt es an der Tür. Deniz trinkt gerade Wasser in der Küche. Lukas macht die Tür auf. Vor der Tür steht eine Frau. Sie ist klein und sie lacht.

At twelve o'clock the doorbell rings. Deniz is just drinking water in the kitchen. Lukas opens the door. In front of the door stands a woman. She is small and she is laughing.

Lukas: „Hallo Mama! Kommst du rein?"

Lukas: "Hello Mum! Are you coming in?"

Frau Weber: „Ja, natürlich komme ich rein. Ist er schon da?"

Frau Weber: "Yes, of course I'm coming in. Is he here already?"

Lukas: „Ja, er ist da. Deniz, das ist meine Mutter. Sie wohnt unten, in Wohnung sieben."

Lukas: "Yes, he's here. Deniz, this is my mother. She lives downstairs, in flat seven."

Deniz: „Guten Tag, Frau Weber."

Deniz: "Good day, Frau Weber."

Frau Weber: „Guten Tag! Ich heiße Renate. Aber Frau Weber ist auch gut. Wie ist Ihr Name?"

Frau Weber: "Good day! My name is Renate. But Frau Weber is fine too. What is your name?"

Deniz: „Mein Name ist Deniz."

Deniz: "My name is Deniz."

Frau Weber: „Deniz. Das ist ein schöner Name. Was bedeutet er?"

Deniz: "Deniz means sea."

Deniz: „Ich komme aus Istanbul."

Deniz: "I come from Istanbul."

Frau Weber: „Istanbul! Und wie alt sind Sie?"

Frau Weber: "Istanbul! And how old are you?"

Deniz: „Ich bin achtundzwanzig."

Deniz: "I'm twenty-eight."

Frau Weber: „Achtundzwanzig. Sehr jung. Ich bin zweiundsechzig."

Frau Weber: "Twenty-eight. Very young. I'm sixty-two."

Deniz: „Zweiundsechzig? Das glaube ich nicht!"

Deniz: "Sixty-two? I don't believe it!"

Frau Weber: „Doch, doch. Und sagen Sie: Haben Sie eine Frau?"

Frau Weber: "Oh yes, really. And tell me: do you have a wife?"

Deniz: „Nein, ich habe keine Frau."

Deniz: "No, I don't have a wife."

Frau Weber: „Und ein Kind? Haben Sie ein Kind?"

Frau Weber: "And a child? Do you have a child?"

Deniz: „Nein, ich habe kein Kind."

Deniz: "No, I don't have a child."

Frau Weber: „Und Ihre Familie? Wo wohnt Ihre Familie?"

Frau Weber: "And your family? Where does your family live?"

Deniz: „Meine Familie wohnt in Istanbul. Mein Vater ist ein alter Mann, er ist siebzig. Meine Mutter ist vierundsechzig. Ich habe auch eine Schwester. Sie ist siebenundzwanzig und sie arbeitet in einer Schule."

Deniz: "My family lives in Istanbul. My father is an old man, he is seventy. My mother is sixty-four. I also have a sister. She is twenty-seven and she works at a school."

Lukas: „Mama, bitte! Du fragst zu viel."

Lukas: "Mum, please! You're asking too much."

Frau Weber: „Ich frage gerne! Ich frage immer viel. Wie soll ich die Menschen sonst verstehen?"

Frau Weber: "I like asking! I always ask a lot. How else am I supposed to understand people?"

Deniz: „Das ist kein Problem. Ich verstehe die Fragen gut. Fragen sind gut für mein Deutsch."

Deniz: "That's no problem. I understand the questions well. Questions are good for my German."

Frau Weber: „Sehen Sie, Lukas! Er versteht mich. Möchten Sie Kaffee oder Tee?"

Frau Weber: "You see, Lukas! He understands me. Would you like coffee or tea?"

Deniz: „Ich möchte gerne einen Tee, bitte."

Deniz: "I'd like a tea, please."

Frau Weber: „Kaffee oder Tee — ich trinke beides. Am Morgen trinke ich Kaffee, am Abend trinke ich Tee. Und Sie? Trinken Sie auch Kaffee?"

Frau Weber: "Coffee or tea — I drink both. In the morning I drink coffee, in the evening I drink tea. And you? Do you drink coffee too?"

Deniz: „Ja, ich trinke auch Kaffee. Aber in der Türkei trinken wir sehr oft Tee. Wir trinken zehn Tassen Tee am Tag."

Deniz: "Yes, I drink coffee too. But in Turkey we drink tea very often. We drink ten cups of tea a day."

Frau Weber: „Zehn Tassen! Das ist viel. Ich trinke drei Tassen Kaffee, dann kann ich nicht schlafen."

Frau Weber: "Ten cups! That's a lot. I drink three cups of coffee, then I can't sleep."

Lukas: „Meine Mutter trinkt sechs Tassen, nicht drei."

Lukas: "My mother drinks six cups, not three."

Frau Weber: „Lukas! Das ist nicht wahr. Also, hören Sie: Ich koche heute Abend. Kommt ihr beide? Um sieben Uhr?"

Frau Weber: "Lukas! That's not true. So, listen: I'm cooking this evening. Are you both coming? At seven o'clock?"

Lukas: „Ja, wir kommen gerne. Was kochst du?"

Lukas: "Yes, we'll gladly come. What are you cooking?"

Frau Weber: „Kartoffeln und Fisch. Ich koche sehr gerne. Deniz, essen Sie Fisch?"

Frau Weber: "Potatoes and fish. I love cooking. Deniz, do you eat fish?"

Deniz: „Ja, ich esse alles. Ich koche auch gerne, aber nicht sehr gut."

Deniz: "Yes, I eat everything. I like cooking too, but I'm not very good at it."

Frau Weber: „Kochen kann man lernen. Das ist wie Deutsch. Sie machen es oft, dann können Sie es."

Frau Weber: "Cooking can be learned. It's like German. You do it often, then you can do it."

Deniz: „Das ist ein schöner Satz. Ich mache es oft, dann kann ich es."

Deniz: "That's a nice sentence. I do it often, then I can do it."

Frau Weber: „Und noch etwas: Mein Mann heißt Thomas. Er ist heute nicht hier. Er spielt Fußball mit seinen Freunden. Er ist vierundsechzig und er spielt immer noch Fußball!"

Frau Weber: "And one more thing: my husband's name is Thomas. He isn't here today. He's playing football with his friends. He's sixty-four and he still plays football!"

Deniz: „Mit vierundsechzig? Das ist stark."

Deniz: "At sixty-four? That's impressive."

Frau Weber: „Ja. Also, bis sieben Uhr. Tschüss, ihr beiden!"

Frau Weber: "Yes. So, see you at seven. Bye, you two!"

Deniz: „Tschüss, Frau Weber. Und danke!"

Deniz: "Bye, Frau Weber. And thank you!"

Am Nachmittag gehen Lukas und Deniz einkaufen. Der Supermarkt ist klein, aber es gibt alles. Deniz nimmt einen Wagen und sucht die Zahlen an den Regalen.

In the afternoon Lukas and Deniz go shopping. The supermarket is small, but it has everything. Deniz takes a trolley and looks for the numbers on the shelves.

Deniz: „Was brauchen wir?"

Deniz: "What do we need?"

Lukas: „Wir müssen Brot, Wasser, Milch und Kaffee kaufen. Ich habe kein Brot mehr zu Hause."

Lukas: "We have to buy bread, water, milk and coffee. I don't have any bread left at home."

Deniz: „Und Tee? Ich brauche Tee. Ohne Tee kann ich nicht leben."

Deniz: "And tea? I need tea. I can't live without tea."

Lukas: „Kein Problem. Wir kaufen auch Tee."

Lukas: "No problem. We'll buy tea too."

Deniz: „Was kostet das Brot hier?"

Deniz: "What does the bread cost here?"

Lukas: „Dieses Brot kostet zwei Euro dreißig. Das Brot dort kostet drei Euro fünfzig."

Deniz: „Dann nehme ich das Brot für zwei Euro dreißig. Und das Wasser? Wie viel kostet das Wasser?"

Lukas: „Ein Euro zwanzig. Sechs Flaschen sind sieben Euro."

Lukas: "One euro twenty. Six bottles are seven euros."

Deniz: „Sechs Flaschen für sieben Euro? Das ist gut. Und der Kaffee?"

Deniz: "Six bottles for seven euros? That's good. And the coffee?"

Lukas: „Der Kaffee kostet fünf Euro sechzig."

Lukas: "The coffee costs five euros sixty."

Deniz: „Okay. Ich kaufe den Kaffee, du kaufst das Brot."

Deniz: "Okay. I'll buy the coffee, you buy the bread."

Deniz sucht dann Salz. Er sucht und sucht, aber er findet es nicht. Da kommt eine Frau.

Then Deniz looks for salt. He searches and searches, but he can't find it. Then a woman comes along.

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, können Sie mir bitte helfen? Ich suche Salz."

Deniz: "Excuse me, can you help me please? I'm looking for salt."

Die Frau: „Kein Problem. Sie gehen dort nach links. Dann Regal acht. Das Salz ist unten."

The woman: "No problem. You go over there to the left. Then shelf eight. The salt is at the bottom."

Deniz: „Ah, jetzt verstehe ich. Regal acht, unten, links. Vielen Dank!"

Deniz: "Ah, now I understand. Shelf eight, at the bottom, on the left. Thank you very much!"

Die Frau: „Bitte schön. Sprechen Sie schon gut Deutsch!"

The woman: "You're welcome. You already speak German well!"

Deniz: „Nein, nein. Mein Deutsch ist noch schlecht."

Deniz: "No, no. My German is still bad."

Die Frau: „Es ist nicht schlecht. Es ist gut."

The woman: "It isn't bad. It's good."

Nach dem Supermarkt gehen sie noch in einen Buchladen. Deniz sucht ein Buch für die Schule.

After the supermarket they also go to a bookshop. Deniz is looking for a book for school.

Deniz: „Ich möchte ein Buch für Deutsch. Ein Buch mit vielen Wörtern."

Deniz: "I'd like a book for German. A book with lots of words."

Lukas: „Dieses Buch hier ist gut. Meine Schwester Mia hat auch dieses Buch."

Lukas: "This book here is good. My sister Mia has this book too."

Deniz: „Was kostet es?"

Deniz: "What does it cost?"

Lukas: „Neunzehn Euro."

Lukas: "Nineteen euros."

Deniz: „Neunzehn Euro sind viel, aber ich brauche es. Ich kaufe es."

Deniz: "Nineteen euros is a lot, but I need it. I'll buy it."

Auf dem Weg nach Hause fragt Deniz noch viel. Er will alles wissen.

On the way home Deniz asks a lot more. He wants to know everything.

Deniz: „Wo ist die Sprachschule? Ist sie weit?"

Deniz: "Where is the language school? Is it far?"

Lukas: „Nein, die Schule ist nicht weit. Sie ist dort, nur zehn Minuten von hier. Du kannst gehen oder du kannst den Bus nehmen."

Lukas: "No, the school isn't far. It's over there, only ten minutes from here. You can walk or you can take the bus."

Deniz: „Wie lange fährt der Bus?"

Deniz: "How long does the bus take?"

Lukas: „Der Bus braucht vier Minuten. Gehen ist besser."

Lukas: "The bus takes four minutes. Walking is better."

Deniz: „Und wann beginnt die Schule?"

Deniz: "And when does school start?"

Lukas: „Am Montag um neun Uhr. Der Kurs ist von neun bis zwölf."

Deniz: „Wie viele Leute sind in der Klasse?"

Deniz: „Und wie lange dauert der Kurs?"

Deniz: "And how long does the course last?"

Lukas: „Drei Monate. Der Lehrer heißt Herr Schneider. Alle sagen, er ist sehr gut, aber sehr streng."

Lukas: "Three months. The teacher is called Herr Schneider. Everyone says he's very good, but very strict."

Deniz: „Streng ist okay. Ich will Deutsch lernen, und dann will ich hier arbeiten."

Deniz: "Strict is fine. I want to learn German, and then I want to work here."

Um sechs Uhr sitzen Lukas und Deniz im Wohnzimmer. Lukas hört Musik. Die Musik ist laut und schnell.

At six o'clock Lukas and Deniz are sitting in the living room. Lukas is listening to music. The music is loud and fast.

Deniz: „Was für Musik ist das?"

Deniz: "What kind of music is that?"

Lukas: „Das ist Rock. Ich höre sehr gerne Rock. Und du? Was hörst du gerne?"

Lukas: "That's rock. I really like listening to rock. And you? What do you like listening to?"

Deniz: „Ich höre gerne alles. Rock, Jazz, auch türkische Musik. Darf ich hier Musik hören?"

Deniz: "I like listening to everything. Rock, jazz, Turkish music too. May I listen to music here?"

Lukas: „Natürlich darfst du Musik hören. Aber nicht nach elf Uhr, bitte. Frau Kaiser wohnt unter uns und sie schläft früh."

Lukas: "Of course you may listen to music. But not after eleven o'clock, please. Frau Kaiser lives below us and she goes to sleep early."

Deniz: „Kein Problem. Nach elf Uhr bin ich still. Spielst du auch Musik?"

Deniz: "No problem. After eleven o'clock I'll be quiet. Do you play music too?"

Lukas: „Ja, ich spiele Gitarre. Aber ich spiele schlecht. Ich spiele nur drei oder vier Lieder."

Lukas: "Yes, I play the guitar. But I play badly. I only play three or four songs."

Deniz: „Drei Lieder sind genug! Ich spiele kein Instrument. Aber ich spiele Fußball."

Deniz: "Three songs is enough! I don't play an instrument. But I play football."

Lukas: „Fußball? Das ist super! Wir spielen jeden Samstag Fußball. Wir sind elf oder zwölf Leute. Willst du kommen?"

Lukas: "Football? That's great! We play football every Saturday. We're eleven or twelve people. Do you want to come?"

Deniz: „Ja, sehr gerne! Wann spielt ihr?"

Deniz: "Yes, very gladly! When do you play?"

Lukas: „Am Samstag um zwei Uhr. Der Platz ist nicht weit, zwanzig Minuten von hier."

Lukas: "On Saturday at two o'clock. The pitch isn't far, twenty minutes from here."

Deniz: „Und was soll ich mitbringen?"

Deniz: "And what should I bring?"

Lukas: „Nichts. Nur Schuhe und Wasser. Wir wollen um zwei Uhr beginnen, aber wir beginnen immer um halb drei."

Lukas: "Nothing. Just shoes and water. We want to start at two o'clock, but we always start at half past two."

Deniz: „Das ist wie in Istanbul!"

Deniz: "That's like in Istanbul!"

Um sieben Uhr gehen beide nach unten. Frau Weber macht die Tür auf. Der Tisch ist schon fertig: Brot, Wasser und Wein.

At seven o'clock both go downstairs. Frau Weber opens the door. The table is already set: bread, water and wine.

Frau Weber: „Kommt rein, kommt rein! Setzt euch. Deniz, dieser Stuhl ist für Sie."

Frau Weber: "Come in, come in! Sit down. Deniz, this chair is for you."

Deniz: „Danke schön. Ihre Wohnung ist sehr schön."

Deniz: "Thank you very much. Your flat is very nice."

Frau Weber: „Danke! Sie ist nicht groß, nur drei Zimmer. Aber wir wohnen hier schon dreißig Jahre."

Frau Weber: "Thank you! It isn't big, only three rooms. But we've been living here for thirty years."

Deniz: „Dreißig Jahre in einem Haus? Das ist lang."

Deniz: "Thirty years in one house? That's a long time."

Frau Weber: „Ja, sehr lang. Lukas war ein kleines Kind, dann war er ein großer Junge, und jetzt ist er ein Mann."

Frau Weber: "Yes, very long. Lukas was a small child, then he was a big boy, and now he is a man."

Lukas: „Mama, bitte."

Lukas: "Mum, please."

Frau Weber: „Ist das nicht wahr? Also, essen wir. Deniz, möchten Sie Wasser oder Wein?"

Frau Weber: "Isn't it true? So, let's eat. Deniz, would you like water or wine?"

Deniz: „Wasser, bitte. Und später vielleicht einen Tee."

Deniz: "Water, please. And maybe a tea later."

Frau Weber: „Natürlich. Tee habe ich immer. Sagen Sie, verstehen Sie mich gut? Ich spreche sehr schnell, das sagen alle."

Frau Weber: "Of course. I always have tea. Tell me, do you understand me well? I speak very fast, everyone says so."

Deniz: „Ich verstehe nicht alles. Aber ich verstehe schon viel. Wenn Sie langsam sprechen, verstehe ich fast alles."

Deniz: "I don't understand everything. But I already understand a lot. If you speak slowly, I understand almost everything."

Frau Weber: „Gut, dann spreche ich langsam. Und Sie sagen ‚Stopp', wenn Sie nicht verstehen."

Frau Weber: "Good, then I'll speak slowly. And you say 'stop' when you don't understand."

Deniz: „Danke. Das mache ich."

Deniz: "Thank you. I'll do that."

Sie essen und sie sprechen. Frau Weber fragt viel, und Deniz antwortet. Er sagt seinen Namen noch einmal, er sagt seine Telefonnummer, er sagt die Hausnummer: vierzehn. Frau Weber lacht und sagt, er lernt schnell.

They eat and they talk. Frau Weber asks a lot, and Deniz answers. He says his name once more, he says his phone number, he says the house number: fourteen. Frau Weber laughs and says he learns fast.

Frau Weber: „Und was machen Sie morgen?"

Frau Weber: "And what are you doing tomorrow?"

Deniz: „Morgen möchte ich die Stadt sehen. Wir wollen zum Dom gehen."

Deniz: "Tomorrow I'd like to see the city. We want to go to the cathedral."

Lukas: „Ja, wir gehen um zehn Uhr. Willst du auch mitkommen, Mama?"

Lukas: "Yes, we're going at ten o'clock. Do you want to come along too, Mum?"

Frau Weber: „Nein, morgen kann ich nicht. Ich muss zum Arzt. Aber ihr beide geht, das ist schön."

Frau Weber: "No, tomorrow I can't. I have to go to the doctor. But you two go, that's lovely."

Deniz: „Und am Montag beginnt die Schule. Wir müssen dort viel lernen: die Zahlen, die Wörter, alles."

Deniz: "And on Monday school starts. We have to learn a lot there: the numbers, the words, everything."

Frau Weber: „Dann üben wir jetzt. Zählen Sie für mich, bitte."

Frau Weber: "Then let's practise now. Count for me, please."

Deniz lacht. Dann zählt er langsam: eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn, vierzehn, fünfzehn, sechzehn, siebzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn, zwanzig.

Deniz laughs. Then he counts slowly: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty.

Frau Weber: „Sehr gut! Und dreißig? Und vierzig?"

Frau Weber: "Very good! And thirty? And forty?"

Deniz: „Zwanzig, dreißig, vierzig. Das kann ich auch."

Deniz: "Twenty, thirty, forty. I can do that too."

Frau Weber: „Perfekt. Sie brauchen keine Schule, Sie können schon alles!"

Frau Weber: "Perfect. You don't need a school, you can already do everything!"

Deniz: „Nein, nein. Ich kann noch nicht viel. Aber ich lerne gerne, und ich frage gerne."

Deniz: "No, no. I can't do much yet. But I like learning, and I like asking."

Lukas: „Fragen ist gut. Meine Mutter fragt auch immer. Ihr beide seid gleich."

Lukas: "Asking is good. My mother always asks too. You two are the same."

Alle lachen. Um zehn Uhr sagen sie „Gute Nacht" und gehen nach oben. Deniz macht die Tür von seinem Zimmer auf. Das Zimmer ist neu für ihn, aber es ist schon ein bisschen sein Zimmer.

Everyone laughs. At ten o'clock they say "good night" and go upstairs. Deniz opens the door of his room. The room is new to him, but it's already a little bit his room.

Er nimmt sein Buch und schreibt: Gartenstraße vierzehn, dritter Stock. Telefon von Lukas: elf, zwölf, dreizehn. WLAN: sechzehn, siebzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn. Schule: Montag, neun Uhr. Fußball: Samstag, zwei Uhr.

He takes his book and writes: Gartenstraße fourteen, third floor. Lukas's phone: eleven, twelve, thirteen. WiFi: sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen. School: Monday, nine o'clock. Football: Saturday, two o'clock.

Dann hört er noch fünf Minuten Musik. Er ist müde und sehr glücklich. All die Zahlen, all die Fragen — der erste Tag war lang, aber er war gut. Deniz sagt leise: „Tschüss, Istanbul. Hallo, Köln." Dann schläft er.

Then he listens to music for five more minutes. He is tired and very happy. All those numbers, all those questions — the first day was long, but it was good. Deniz says quietly: "Goodbye, Istanbul. Hello, Cologne." Then he falls asleep.
