Papiere, Post und Telefon

Es ist Montagmorgen in Köln. Deniz sitzt in der Küche und trinkt Tee. Lukas kommt herein. Er hat die Post in der Hand.

It is Monday morning in Cologne. Deniz is sitting in the kitchen drinking tea. Lukas comes in. He has the mail in his hand.

Lukas: „Guten Morgen, Deniz! Kann ich dir einen Kaffee anbieten?"

Lukas: "Good morning, Deniz! Can I offer you a coffee?"

Deniz: „Nein, danke. Ich trinke heute Tee. Was hast du denn da?"

Deniz: "No, thanks. I'm drinking tea today. What have you got there?"

Lukas: „Post. Ein Brief für dich. Schau mal oben links, da steht der Absender."

Lukas: "Mail. A letter for you. Have a look at the top left, that's where the sender is."

Deniz: „Der Absender ist … Stadt Köln, Bürgeramt. Ist das ein Problem?"

Deniz: "The sender is ... City of Cologne, Citizens' Office. Is that a problem?"

Lukas: „Nein, das ist kein Problem. Mach ihn auf!"

Lukas: "No, that's not a problem. Open it!"

Deniz macht den Brief auf. Das Papier ist weiß und sehr voll. Oben steht sein Name. Er ist der Empfänger. Er liest langsam und versteht nur die Hälfte.

Deniz opens the letter. The paper is white and very full. His name is at the top. He is the recipient. He reads slowly and understands only half of it.

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, das habe ich nicht verstanden. Was bedeutet 'Anmeldung'?"

Deniz: "Sorry, I didn't understand that. What does 'Anmeldung' mean?"

Lukas: „Du musst dich anmelden. Jeder Mensch in Deutschland muss das machen. Du wohnst jetzt hier, also gehst du zum Amt und sagst: Ich wohne hier."

Lukas: "You have to register. Every person in Germany has to do that. You live here now, so you go to the office and say: I live here."

Deniz: „Und was ist dieses Papier mit den vielen kleinen Kästchen?"

Deniz: "And what is this paper with all the little boxes?"

Lukas: „Das ist ein Formular. Du musst das Formular ausfüllen und unterschreiben. Aber ich muss jetzt ins Büro. Ruf doch Elif an!"

Lukas: "That's a form. You have to fill out the form and sign it. But I have to go to the office now. Why don't you call Elif?"

Deniz telefoniert nicht gern. Am Telefon ist Deutsch viel schwerer, weil er das Gesicht nicht sieht. Aber er nimmt sein Handy und ruft Elif an. Es klingelt viermal. Dann kommt eine Ansage.

Deniz doesn't like phoning. German is much harder on the phone, because he can't see the face. But he takes his mobile and calls Elif. It rings four times. Then a recorded message comes on.

Ansage: „Hier ist der Anrufbeantworter von Elif Demir. Bitte sprechen Sie nach dem Ton."

Recorded message: "This is Elif Demir's answering machine. Please speak after the tone."

Deniz: „Hallo Elif, hier ist Deniz. Ich habe eine Frage zu einem Brief. Kannst du mich bitte zurückrufen?"

Deniz: "Hi Elif, it's Deniz. I have a question about a letter. Can you call me back, please?"

Zwanzig Minuten später klingelt das Handy. Der Anruf kommt von Elif.

Twenty minutes later the mobile rings. The call is from Elif.

Elif: „Hallo Deniz! Ich habe deinen Anruf auf dem Anrufbeantworter gehört. Was ist los?"

Elif: "Hi Deniz! I heard your call on the answering machine. What's up?"

Deniz: „Ich habe eine Frage zu diesem Brief. Der Absender ist das Bürgeramt. Es geht um die Anmeldung, und es gibt ein Formular."

Deniz: "I have a question about this letter. The sender is the Citizens' Office. It's about registration, and there's a form."

Elif: „Ah, das kenne ich gut. Ich komme um vier, dann lesen wir den Brief zusammen."

Elif: "Ah, I know that one well. I'll come at four, then we'll read the letter together."

Deniz: „Danke! Ich habe auch ein kleines Geschenk für dich: Schokolade aus Istanbul."

Deniz: "Thanks! I also have a little present for you: chocolate from Istanbul."

Elif: „Schokolade ist immer ein gutes Geschenk. Bis später!"

Elif: "Chocolate is always a good present. See you later!"

Um elf Uhr klopft es. Frau Weber steht vor der Tür. Sie hat einen Kuchen und einen Brief in der Hand.

At eleven o'clock there's a knock. Frau Weber is standing at the door. She has a cake and a letter in her hand.

Frau Weber: „Guten Tag, Deniz! Haben Sie vielleicht eine Briefmarke für mich? Ich möchte diesen Brief an meine Schwester schicken."

Frau Weber: "Good day, Deniz! Do you maybe have a stamp for me? I'd like to send this letter to my sister."

Deniz: „Einen Moment. Hier ist eine Briefmarke."

Deniz: "One moment. Here's a stamp."

Frau Weber: „Vielen Dank! Und was gibt es Neues? Kommt Ihre Familie bald?"

Frau Weber: "Thank you very much! And what's new? Is your family coming soon?"

Deniz: „Ja! Meine Mutter möchte mich im Sommer besuchen. Sie bleibt zehn Tage."

Deniz: "Yes! My mother wants to visit me in the summer. She's staying ten days."

Frau Weber: „Wie schön! Aber wo schläft sie? Bei Ihnen ist es doch klein."

Frau Weber: "How lovely! But where will she sleep? Your place is so small."

Deniz: „Das ist das Problem. Sie kann bei uns nicht übernachten. Ich suche ein Hotel."

Deniz: "That's the problem. She can't stay overnight with us. I'm looking for a hotel."

Frau Weber: „Ich kenne ein kleines Hotel hier in der Nähe. Braucht sie ein Einzelzimmer oder ein Doppelzimmer?"

Frau Weber: "I know a small hotel here nearby. Does she need a single room or a double room?"

Deniz: „Ein Einzelzimmer. Sie kommt allein, und ein Doppelzimmer ist zu teuer."

Deniz: "A single room. She's coming alone, and a double room is too expensive."

Frau Weber: „Dann rufen Sie einfach an der Rezeption an. Die Frau an der Rezeption spricht auch Englisch, aber sprechen Sie Deutsch! Und noch etwas: Am Sonntag möchte ich Sie und Lukas einladen. Ich mache Kuchen."

Frau Weber: "Then just call the reception. The woman at the reception speaks English too, but you speak German! And one more thing: on Sunday I'd like to invite you and Lukas. I'm making cake."

Deniz: „Sehr gern. Danke für die Einladung."

Deniz: "With pleasure. Thank you for the invitation."

Um vier Uhr kommt Elif. Sie hat eine Zeitung dabei und einen Prospekt von einem Hotel.

At four o'clock Elif arrives. She has a newspaper with her and a brochure from a hotel.

Elif: „Zeig mir den Brief. Und leg bitte alle Papiere auf den Tisch. Ohne Papiere geht beim Amt gar nichts."

Elif: "Show me the letter. And please put all your documents on the table. Without documents nothing works at a public office."

Deniz: „Hier sind meine Papiere: mein Pass, der Mietvertrag und der Brief. Kannst du ihn bitte laut lesen? Langsam, bitte."

Deniz: "Here are my documents: my passport, the rental contract and the letter. Can you read it out loud, please? Slowly, please."

Elif: „Klar. 'Sehr geehrter Herr Deniz, bitte füllen Sie das Formular aus und kommen Sie mit Ihrem Pass zum Bürgeramt.'"

Elif: "Sure. 'Dear Mr Deniz, please fill out the form and come to the Citizens' Office with your passport.'"

Deniz: „Ich habe eine Frage zu diesem Brief. Was heißt 'Sehr geehrter Herr'?"

Deniz: "I have a question about this letter. What does 'Sehr geehrter Herr' mean?"

Elif: „Das ist nur höflich. So schreibt man einen offiziellen Brief. Der Rest ist einfach: Du gehst zum Amt, du gibst das Formular ab und du bekommst ein Papier."

Elif: "It's just polite. That's how you write an official letter. The rest is easy: you go to the office, you hand in the form and you get a piece of paper."

Elif nimmt das Formular. Es ist ein großer Bogen aus dickem Papier.

Elif picks up the form. It's a big sheet of thick paper.

Elif: „Das Formular hat zwei Teile. Der erste Bogen ist für dich, der zweite Teil ist für die Familie. Du bist ledig, also bleibt er leer. Hier schreibst du den Namen, hier die Adresse. Und hier musst du etwas ankreuzen."

Elif: "The form has two parts. The first sheet is for you, the second part is for the family. You're single, so it stays empty. Here you write the name, here the address. And here you have to tick something."

Deniz: „Soll ich jetzt unterschreiben?"

Deniz: "Should I sign now?"

Elif: „Nein, noch nicht. Deine Unterschrift kommt erst am Schalter. Die Frau am Schalter sagt dir, wo du unterschreiben musst."

Elif: "No, not yet. Your signature comes at the counter. The woman at the counter tells you where you have to sign."

Deniz: „Muss ich das Formular mit der Post schicken?"

Deniz: "Do I have to send the form by post?"

Elif: „Nein. Manche Leute schicken es mit der Post, dann ist der Empfänger das Bürgeramt. Du hast einen Termin, also gibst du es persönlich ab."

Elif: "No. Some people send it by post, then the recipient is the Citizens' Office. You have an appointment, so you hand it in personally."

Elif sieht den Pass von Deniz an. Auf der ersten Seite ist ein Foto. Sie lacht.

Elif looks at Deniz's passport. On the first page there's a photo. She laughs.

Elif: „Ist das dein Foto? Du siehst auf dem Bild so ernst aus, wie ein Mann in einem alten Film!"

Elif: "Is that your photo? You look so serious in that picture, like a man in an old film!"

Deniz: „Auf dem Foto war ich neunzehn. Ich hatte lange Haare."

Deniz: "In that photo I was nineteen. I had long hair."

Elif nimmt die Zeitung und zeigt ihm eine Seite.

Elif takes the newspaper and shows him a page.

Elif: „Hier in der Zeitung war eine Anzeige: ein Hotel am Rhein, ein Zimmer ab 55 Euro. Und der Prospekt ist von dem gleichen Hotel. Schau, dieses Bild hier ist das Einzelzimmer."

Elif: "There was an ad here in the newspaper: a hotel by the Rhine, a room from 55 euros. And the brochure is from the same hotel. Look, this picture here is the single room."

Deniz: „Sehr schön. Meine Mutter macht nicht oft Urlaub. Diese Reise ist wichtig für sie."

Deniz: "Very nice. My mother doesn't often take a holiday. This trip is important for her."

Elif: „Wie lange war deine Reise nach Deutschland?"

Elif: "How long was your trip to Germany?"

Deniz: „Vier Stunden mit dem Flugzeug. Meine Mutter fliegt nicht gern."

Deniz: "Four hours by plane. My mother doesn't like flying."

Elif: „Wenn sie hier ist, machen wir einen Ausflug nach Bonn. Aber zuerst der Termin: Morgen rufst du das Amt an."

Elif: "When she's here, we'll go on an excursion to Bonn. But first the appointment: tomorrow you call the office."

Deniz: „Morgen? Oh je. Mein Kopf ist heute schon voll."

Deniz: "Tomorrow? Oh dear. My head is already full today."

Am Dienstagmorgen sitzt Deniz vor dem Computer. Im Internet gibt es eine Seite von der Stadt, aber es gibt keinen freien Termin. Elif sitzt neben ihm.

On Tuesday morning Deniz is sitting in front of the computer. On the internet there's a page from the city, but there's no free appointment. Elif is sitting next to him.

Elif: „Dann musst du anrufen. Der Computer hilft dir heute nicht."

Elif: "Then you have to call. The computer isn't helping you today."

Deniz: „Muss ich wirklich telefonieren? Ich habe Angst vor dem Telefon."

Deniz: "Do I really have to phone? I'm afraid of the telephone."

Elif schreibt drei Sätze auf einen kleinen Bogen Papier: „Ich möchte einen Termin machen." – „Können Sie das bitte buchstabieren?" – „Entschuldigung, das habe ich nicht verstanden."

Elif writes three sentences on a small sheet of paper: "I'd like to make an appointment." – "Could you spell that, please?" – "Sorry, I didn't understand that."

Deniz nimmt das Handy. Zuerst hört er nur ein Geräusch: Der Anschluss ist besetzt. Er wartet fünf Minuten und ruft noch einmal an. Jetzt kommt eine Ansage.

Deniz takes the mobile. At first he only hears a noise: the line is busy. He waits five minutes and calls again. Now a recorded announcement comes on.

Ansage: „Sie hören eine Ansage der Stadt Köln. Für die Anmeldung drücken Sie bitte die Eins. Für den Ausweis drücken Sie die Zwei."

Announcement: "You are listening to an announcement from the City of Cologne. For registration, please press one. For ID cards, press two."

Deniz drückt die Eins. Dann kommt Musik. Es ist immer das gleiche Lied. Nach vier Minuten hat er das Lied im Kopf. Dann spricht endlich eine Frau.

Deniz presses one. Then music comes on. It's always the same song. After four minutes he has the song stuck in his head. Then at last a woman speaks.

Frau Klein: „Bürgeramt Köln, Klein, guten Tag."

Frau Klein: "Cologne Citizens' Office, Klein speaking, good day."

Deniz: „Guten Tag. Ich möchte einen Termin machen, bitte."

Deniz: "Good day. I'd like to make an appointment, please."

Frau Klein: „Gern. Um was geht es?"

Frau Klein: "Certainly. What is it about?"

Deniz: „Um die Anmeldung. Ich bin neu in Köln und habe einen Brief bekommen."

Deniz: "About registration. I'm new in Cologne and I got a letter."

Frau Klein: „Alles klar. Wie ist Ihr Name?"

Frau Klein: "All right. What is your name?"

Deniz: „Mein Name ist Deniz."

Deniz: "My name is Deniz."

Frau Klein: „Können Sie das bitte buchstabieren?"

Frau Klein: "Could you spell that, please?"

Deniz: „Ja. D – E – N – I – Z. Und der Familienname: Y – A – G – C – I."

Deniz: "Yes. D – E – N – I – Z. And the family name: Y – A – G – C – I."

Frau Klein: „Entschuldigung, noch einmal bitte. War das Y wie Ypsilon am Anfang?"

Frau Klein: "Sorry, once more please. Was that a Y at the beginning?"

Deniz: „Ja, genau. Y wie Ypsilon, dann A, G, C, I."

Deniz: "Yes, exactly. Y, then A, G, C, I."

Frau Klein: „Danke. Ich habe einen Termin am Donnerstag um neun Uhr zwanzig, Zimmer 214."

Frau Klein: "Thank you. I have an appointment on Thursday at nine twenty, room 214."

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, das habe ich nicht verstanden. Können Sie das bitte langsam wiederholen?"

Deniz: "Sorry, I didn't understand that. Could you repeat it slowly, please?"

Frau Klein: „Natürlich. Donnerstag, neun Uhr zwanzig, Zimmer 214."

Frau Klein: "Of course. Thursday, nine twenty, room 214."

Deniz: „Danke. Und was muss ich mitbringen?"

Deniz: "Thanks. And what do I have to bring?"

Frau Klein: „Bringen Sie bitte Ihren Pass mit. Ist Ihr Pass noch gültig?"

Frau Klein: "Please bring your passport. Is your passport still valid?"

Deniz: „Ja, er ist noch vier Jahre gültig."

Deniz: "Yes, it's valid for another four years."

Frau Klein: „Gut. Und bitte füllen Sie das Formular vorher aus. Einen Moment, ich muss noch etwas prüfen. Ich rufe Sie später zurück."

Frau Klein: "Good. And please fill out the form beforehand. One moment, I still have to check something. I'll call you back later."

Deniz legt das Handy auf den Tisch. Seine Hand ist ein bisschen nass, aber er lacht.

Deniz puts the mobile on the table. His hand is a little damp, but he's laughing.

Elif: „Und? Alles in Ordnung?"

Elif: "So? Is everything all right?"

Deniz: „Ja! Ich habe einen Termin am Donnerstag. Ich habe auf Deutsch telefoniert!"

Deniz: "Yes! I have an appointment on Thursday. I made a phone call in German!"

Eine halbe Stunde später ruft Frau Klein wirklich zurück. Der Termin ist jetzt in Zimmer 208. Deniz schreibt die Nummer sofort auf ein Papier.

Half an hour later Frau Klein really does call back. The appointment is now in room 208. Deniz writes the number down on a piece of paper straight away.

Am Nachmittag scheint die Sonne. Das Wetter ist plötzlich schön, und sie gehen in die Stadt. Vor einem Reisebüro bleiben sie stehen. Im Fenster liegen viele Prospekte, und sie gehen hinein.

In the afternoon the sun is shining. The weather is suddenly nice, and they go into town. They stop in front of a travel agency. There are lots of brochures in the window, and they go inside.

Deniz: „Ich liebe Reisebüros. Als Kind habe ich immer Prospekte gesammelt."

Deniz: "I love travel agencies. As a child I always collected the brochures."

Elif: „Willst du einen Plan von Köln oder einen Reiseführer kaufen?"

Elif: "Do you want to buy a map of Cologne or a travel guide?"

Deniz: „Ein Reiseführer ist gut, und ein Plan ist praktisch. Entschuldigung, was kostet der Reiseführer?"

Deniz: "A travel guide is good, and a map is practical. Excuse me, how much is the travel guide?"

Die Frau im Reisebüro: „Neun Euro, und der Plan kostet fünf Euro. Fahren Sie ins Ausland?"

The woman at the travel agency: "Nine euros, and the map costs five euros. Are you travelling abroad?"

Deniz: „Nein. Meine Mutter kommt aus dem Ausland zu mir."

Deniz: "No. My mother is coming to me from abroad."

Die Frau im Reisebüro: „Hier ist noch ein Prospekt vom Museum. Der Eintritt kostet für Gruppen weniger."

The woman at the travel agency: "Here's another brochure from the museum. Admission costs less for groups."

Am Donnerstag ist das Wetter schlecht. Es gibt viel Regen und viel Wind. Deniz hat die Papiere in einer Tasche: das Formular, den Pass und den Brief.

On Thursday the weather is bad. There's a lot of rain and a lot of wind. Deniz has the documents in a bag: the form, the passport and the letter.

Am Bahnhof hört er eine Durchsage.

At the station he hears an announcement.

Durchsage: „Achtung, eine Durchsage: Die Bahn nach Deutz fährt heute zehn Minuten später."

Announcement: "Attention, an announcement: the train to Deutz is running ten minutes late today."

Deniz: „Oh nein. Ich habe einen Termin um neun Uhr zwanzig."

Deniz: "Oh no. I have an appointment at nine twenty."

Ein Mann neben ihm: „Keine Angst. Sie haben in Deutz Anschluss an die Linie 5. Der Anschluss wartet meistens."

A man next to him: "Don't worry. In Deutz you have a connection to line 5. The connection usually waits."

Deniz kommt um neun Uhr zehn am Amt an. Vor der Tür steht ein Schild: „Vorsicht, Stufe!" Im Haus wartet schon eine Gruppe von Menschen.

Deniz arrives at the office at ten past nine. In front of the door there's a sign: "Caution, step!" Inside the building a group of people is already waiting.

Neben der Tür steht eine Maschine. Man drückt auf einen Knopf und bekommt eine Nummer. Aber die Maschine ist kaputt. An der Maschine klebt ein Papier: „Die Maschine ist in Reparatur."

Next to the door there's a machine. You press a button and get a number. But the machine is broken. A piece of paper is stuck to the machine: "The machine is being repaired."

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, wie bekomme ich eine Nummer?"

Deniz: "Excuse me, how do I get a number?"

Eine Frau: „Die Maschine ist seit Montag kaputt. Ein Mann will sie reparieren, aber er kommt nie. Die Reparatur dauert wohl lange. Nehmen Sie einfach einen Zettel."

A woman: "The machine has been broken since Monday. A man is supposed to repair it, but he never comes. The repair is probably taking a long time. Just take a slip."

Deniz setzt sich in das Wartezimmer. Er hat die Nummer 47 in der Hand. Sein Bein wackelt. Sein Mund ist trocken. Er legt den Arm auf die Tasche. Aus dem Fenster hat man einen schönen Blick auf den Dom.

Deniz sits down in the waiting room. He has number 47 in his hand. His leg is jiggling. His mouth is dry. He rests his arm on the bag. From the window there's a nice view of the cathedral.

Ein alter Mann sitzt neben ihm. Er heißt Herr Bauer.

An old man is sitting next to him. His name is Herr Bauer.

Herr Bauer: „Sie sind nervös, oder? Ihr Bein wackelt."

Herr Bauer: "You're nervous, aren't you? Your leg is jiggling."

Deniz: „Ja, ein bisschen. Ich bin neu hier."

Deniz: "Yes, a little. I'm new here."

Herr Bauer: „Ihr Deutsch ist gut! Woher kommen Sie?"

Herr Bauer: "Your German is good! Where are you from?"

Deniz: „Aus Istanbul. Ich wohne seit zwei Monaten in Köln."

Deniz: "From Istanbul. I've been living in Cologne for two months."

Herr Bauer: „Istanbul! Meine Tochter war dort und hat viele Fotos gemacht. Haben Sie den Dom schon besichtigt?"

Herr Bauer: "Istanbul! My daughter was there and took lots of photos. Have you visited the cathedral yet?"

Deniz: „Nein, noch nicht. Ich möchte ihn gern besichtigen."

Deniz: "No, not yet. I'd like to visit it."

Herr Bauer: „Der Dom ist die wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit hier. Der Blick von oben ist super. Aber Vorsicht: Es gibt 533 Stufen, danach tut jeder Fuß weh. Früher bin ich jede Woche hochgegangen, denn Sport ist mein Hobby. Ich schwimme auch zweimal pro Woche, das ist gut für den Arm und für das Bein. Und was ist Ihr Hobby?"

Herr Bauer: "The cathedral is the most important sight here. The view from the top is great. But careful: there are 533 steps, and afterwards every foot hurts. I used to go up every week, because sport is my hobby. I also swim twice a week, that's good for your arm and for your leg. And what's your hobby?"

Deniz: „Ich fotografiere gern, und ich koche gern."

Deniz: "I like taking photographs, and I like cooking."

Sie lachen. Dann kommt eine Durchsage im Wartezimmer.

They laugh. Then an announcement comes over the waiting room.

Durchsage: „Nummer 45, bitte zu Schalter 2."

Announcement: "Number 45, to counter 2, please."

Herr Bauer: „Das bin ich. Ich muss nur etwas abgeben. Nächste Woche kann ich meinen neuen Ausweis abholen. Viel Glück, junger Mann!"

Herr Bauer: "That's me. I only have to hand something in. Next week I can pick up my new ID card. Good luck, young man!"

Deniz reibt sich ein Auge. Er hat heute Nacht schlecht geschlafen. Sein Kopf ist voll: Formular, Pass, Unterschrift, Nummer 47.

Deniz rubs one eye. He slept badly last night. His head is full: form, passport, signature, number 47.

Durchsage: „Nummer 47, bitte zu Schalter 3."

Announcement: "Number 47, to counter 3, please."

Deniz steht auf. Am Schalter 3 sitzt ein Mann mit einer Brille. Auf dem Schild steht: „Herr Fischer".

Deniz stands up. At counter 3 sits a man with glasses. The sign says: "Herr Fischer".

Deniz: „Guten Tag. Ich habe einen Termin. Es geht um die Anmeldung."

Deniz: "Good day. I have an appointment. It's about the registration."

Herr Fischer: „Guten Tag. Haben Sie das Formular schon ausgefüllt?"

Herr Fischer: "Good day. Have you already filled out the form?"

Deniz: „Ja, hier ist es. Ich habe es gestern ausgefüllt."

Deniz: "Yes, here it is. I filled it out yesterday."

Herr Fischer: „Sehr gut. Und haben Sie Ihren Pass dabei?"

Herr Fischer: "Very good. And do you have your passport with you?"

Deniz: „Ja, hier ist mein Pass. Ich habe keinen deutschen Ausweis."

Deniz: "Yes, here's my passport. I don't have a German ID card."

Herr Fischer: „Kein Problem, ein ausländischer Pass ist auch in Ordnung. Er ist noch bis 2029 gültig."

Herr Fischer: "No problem, a foreign passport is fine too. And it's still valid until 2029."

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, das habe ich nicht verstanden. Was heißt 'gültig'?"

Deniz: "Sorry, I didn't understand that. What does 'gültig' mean?"

Herr Fischer: „Gültig heißt: Das Dokument ist noch gut. Nach 2029 ist Ihr Pass nicht mehr gültig. So, hier fehlt noch etwas. Bitte füllen Sie das Formular hier unten aus. Und hier müssen Sie etwas ankreuzen: Haben Sie Kinder?"

Herr Fischer: "'Gültig' means: the document is still good. After 2029 your passport is no longer valid. Right, something is still missing here. Please fill out the form down here. And here you have to tick something: do you have children?"

Deniz: „Nein, ich habe keine Kinder."

Deniz: "No, I don't have children."

Herr Fischer: „Dann kreuzen Sie hier 'nein' an. Die Frage ist wichtig, weil man Kinder auch für den Kindergarten anmelden muss. Und jetzt kommt die Unterschrift: Bitte unterschreiben Sie hier unten. Dann geben Sie mir den Bogen zurück."

Herr Fischer: "Then tick 'no' here. The question is important, because children also have to be registered for kindergarten. And now comes the signature: please sign down here. Then give the sheet back to me."

Deniz unterschreibt. Seine Hand zittert ein bisschen, aber die Unterschrift ist gut. Er gibt das Formular ab.

Deniz signs. His hand shakes a little, but the signature is good. He hands in the form.

Herr Fischer: „Danke. Ich brauche zwei Minuten, der Computer ist heute langsam. Wie gefällt es Ihnen in Köln?"

Herr Fischer: "Thank you. I need two minutes, the computer is slow today. How do you like it in Cologne?"

Deniz: „Sehr gut. Am Anfang war alles fremd: die Sprache, die Stadt, die Schilder. Heute ist es besser. Köln ist international, und der Dom ist weltweit bekannt."

Deniz: "Very much. At the beginning everything was strange: the language, the city, the signs. Today it's better. Cologne is international, and the cathedral is famous worldwide."

Herr Fischer: „Das stimmt, Köln ist eine bekannte Stadt. So, hier ist Ihr Papier. Das ist die Anmeldung. Bitte gut aufheben!"

Herr Fischer: "That's true, Cologne is a well-known city. Right, here is your paper. That's the registration. Please keep it safe!"

Draußen regnet es nicht mehr, und die Sonne kommt. Deniz ruft sofort Elif an, aber ihr Anschluss ist besetzt. Zehn Minuten später ruft sie zurück.

Outside it isn't raining any more, and the sun is coming out. Deniz calls Elif straight away, but her line is busy. Ten minutes later she calls back.

Deniz: „Alles gut! Ich habe das Formular abgegeben und unterschrieben. Ich bin jetzt offiziell in Köln! Und ich habe Hunger."

Deniz: "All good! I handed in the form and signed it. I'm officially in Cologne now! And I'm hungry."

Elif: „In zwanzig Minuten bin ich am Café am Markt."

Elif: "I'll be at the café on the market square in twenty minutes."

Im Café ist es warm. Deniz hat Durst und Hunger. Der Kellner kommt.

It's warm in the café. Deniz is thirsty and hungry. The waiter comes.

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, was können Sie empfehlen?"

Deniz: "Excuse me, what can you recommend?"

Der Kellner: „Ich kann die Suppe empfehlen. Möchten Sie sonst noch etwas bestellen?"

The waiter: "I can recommend the soup. Would you like to order anything else?"

Deniz: „Nur die Suppe, bitte. Und ein großes Wasser, ich habe Durst."

Deniz: "Just the soup, please. And a large water, I'm thirsty."

Der Kellner: „Gern. Guten Appetit!"

The waiter: "Certainly. Enjoy your meal!"

Deniz: „Ich habe seit gestern Abend nichts gegessen. Mein Appetit ist heute sehr groß."

Deniz: "I haven't eaten since last night. My appetite is very big today."

Elif: „Nach dem Zoll habe ich am Flughafen immer sofort etwas bestellt."

Elif: "After customs at the airport I always ordered something straight away too."

Deniz: „Der Zoll! Bei meiner ersten Reise hatte ich ein Problem am Zoll. Meine Mutter hat mir drei Kilo Essen mitgegeben."

Deniz: "Customs! On my first trip I had a problem at customs. My mother had given me three kilos of food to take along."

Elif: „Und was hat der Mann am Zoll gesagt?"

Elif: "And what did the man at customs say?"

Deniz: „Er hat den Koffer aufgemacht und gelacht. Dann hat er gesagt: 'Ihre Mutter liebt Sie sehr.'"

Deniz: "He opened the suitcase and laughed. Then he said: 'Your mother loves you very much.'"

Elif: „Mütter kümmern sich immer um das Essen."

Elif: "Mothers always take care of the food."

Deniz: „Ja. Und jetzt kümmere ich mich um sie. Ich muss noch das Hotel buchen."

Deniz: "Yes. And now I'm taking care of her. I still have to book the hotel."

Am Abend sitzt Deniz mit dem Computer am Tisch. Lukas macht den Fernseher an, es läuft ein alter Film.

In the evening Deniz sits at the table with the computer. Lukas turns on the television, an old film is on.

Lukas: „Warum rufst du nicht an der Rezeption an?"

Lukas: "Why don't you call the reception?"

Deniz: „Ich habe zweimal angerufen, es war immer besetzt. Eine E-Mail ist einfacher, weil ich dann in Ruhe schreiben kann."

Deniz: "I've called twice, it was busy every time. An e-mail is easier, because then I can write in peace."

Deniz schreibt langsam. Die E-Mail ist kurz:

Deniz: „'Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ich möchte ein Einzelzimmer für meine Mutter buchen, vom 12. bis 22. Juli, bitte mit Halbpension. Was kostet das Zimmer mit Halbpension pro Nacht? Meine Mutter möchte auch die Sehenswürdigkeiten besichtigen. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Deniz.'"

Deniz: "'Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to book a single room for my mother, from 12 to 22 July, with half board please. How much does the room with half board cost per night? My mother would also like to visit the sights. Kind regards, Deniz.'"

Lukas: „Sehr gut! Schick sie ab!"

Lukas: "Very good! Send it off!"

Deniz: „Moment, ich lese sie noch einmal. Ordnung muss sein."

Deniz: "Wait, I'll read it once more. There has to be order."

Am nächsten Morgen ist die Antwort da: Das Hotel hat noch ein Einzelzimmer frei. Mit Halbpension kostet es 78 Euro pro Nacht. Im Anhang sind ein Prospekt und ein Plan von der Stadt.

Am Sonntag gehen Deniz und Lukas zu Frau Weber. Es gibt Kuchen, Kaffee und viele Fragen.

On Sunday Deniz and Lukas go to Frau Weber's. There's cake, coffee and lots of questions.

Frau Weber: „Sehen Sie, Deniz! Ein Brief, ein Telefonat, ein Formular – und alles ist in Ordnung."

Frau Weber: "You see, Deniz! A letter, a phone call, a form – and everything is in order."

Deniz: „Ja. Und am Telefon habe ich jetzt keine Angst mehr."

Deniz: "Yes. And I'm not afraid of the telephone any more."

Lukas: „Warte nur. Nächste Woche kommt bestimmt der nächste Brief."

Lukas: "Just wait. Next week the next letter will definitely arrive."

Deniz: „Kein Problem. Dann rufe ich einfach wieder an."

Deniz: "No problem. Then I'll simply call again."
