Die Berufsmesse

Es ist Samstagmorgen. Draußen ist der Himmel dunkel und grau. Es regnet schon seit sechs Uhr. Deniz steht in der Küche am Fenster und trinkt Kaffee. Heute ist ein wichtiger Tag, denn er fährt mit Elif zur Berufsmesse in Köln-Deutz.

It is Saturday morning. Outside the sky is dark and grey. It has been raining since six o'clock. Deniz is standing at the kitchen window drinking coffee. Today is an important day, because he is going with Elif to the job fair in Cologne-Deutz.

Lukas: „Guten Morgen, Deniz. Du bist ja schon wach."

Lukas: "Good morning, Deniz. You're up already!"

Deniz: „Guten Morgen, Lukas. Ich konnte nicht gut schlafen. Ich bin ein bisschen nervös."

Deniz: "Good morning, Lukas. I couldn't sleep well. I'm a bit nervous."

Lukas: „Das ist klar. So eine Messe ist neu für dich. Aber du hast Glück: Am Nachmittag scheint vielleicht die Sonne."

Lukas: "That's understandable. A fair like this is new for you. But you're lucky: this afternoon the sun might shine."

Deniz: „Im Moment regnet es sehr stark. Wie viel Grad haben wir heute?"

Deniz: "Right now it's raining very hard. How many degrees do we have today?"

Lukas: „Nur zwölf Grad. Für August ist das wirklich kalt."

Lukas: "Only twelve degrees. For August that's really cold."

Deniz: „In Istanbul sind es heute dreißig Grad. Dort scheint die Sonne, und die Leute sitzen am Meer und essen Eis."

Deniz: "In Istanbul it's thirty degrees today. The sun is shining there, and people are sitting by the sea eating ice cream."

Deniz: „Und hier ist der Kaffee heute leider sehr bitter."

Deniz: "And here the coffee is unfortunately very bitter today."

Lukas: „Oh, ich habe keinen Zucker gekauft. Das war mein Fehler. Aber bitterer Kaffee macht wach, und heute musst du wach sein."

Lukas: "Oh, I didn't buy any sugar. That was my mistake. But bitter coffee wakes you up, and today you have to be awake."

Deniz geht ins Wohnzimmer. Auf dem Tisch steht der Drucker. Deniz möchte seinen Lebenslauf drucken, aber der Drucker macht nichts.

Deniz goes into the living room. The printer is on the table. Deniz wants to print his CV, but the printer does nothing.

Deniz: „Lukas, kannst du mir bitte helfen? Der Drucker funktioniert nicht."

Deniz: "Lukas, can you help me please? The printer isn't working."

Lukas: „Ist der Text denn offen?"

Lukas: "Is the text actually open?"

Deniz: „Ja, der Text ist hier auf dem Bildschirm. Ich habe schon zehnmal auf das Feld geklickt."

Deniz: "Yes, the text is here on the screen. I've already clicked the field ten times."

Lukas: „Warte. Du musst hier anklicken, nicht da. Dann kommt ein Fenster, und dann musst du unten noch einmal anklicken. So."

Lukas: "Wait. You have to click here, not there. Then a window comes up, and then you have to click again at the bottom. Like this."

Der Drucker macht ein Geräusch und beginnt zu drucken. Nach einer Minute hat Deniz drei Seiten in der Hand.

The printer makes a noise and starts to print. After a minute Deniz has three pages in his hand.

Deniz: „Danke! Du bist die Lösung für alle meine Probleme."

Deniz: "Thanks! You're the solution to all my problems."

Lukas: „Das war keine große Lösung. Der Fehler war ganz klein. Bei einem Drucker ist der Fehler immer klein."

Lukas: "That wasn't a big solution. The mistake was tiny. With a printer the mistake is always tiny."

Deniz: „Mein Vater schickt in der Türkei manchmal noch ein Fax."

Deniz: "My father in Turkey still sends a fax sometimes."

Lukas: „Ein Fax! In meinem Büro steht auch ein Fax, aber niemand benutzt es. Das Ding ist tot."

Lukas: "A fax! There's a fax machine in my office too, but nobody uses it. The thing is dead."

Es klingelt an der Tür. Frau Weber kommt herein.

The doorbell rings. Frau Weber comes in.

Frau Weber: „Guten Morgen, ihr zwei! Ich habe Brötchen aus der Bäckerei mitgebracht. Und für dich, Deniz, habe ich eine CD. Deutsche Lieder, ein Sänger aus Köln. Musik hilft beim Lernen."

Frau Weber: "Good morning, you two! I brought rolls from the bakery. And for you, Deniz, I have a CD. German songs, a singer from Cologne. Music helps with learning."

Deniz: „Vielen Dank, Frau Weber! Ich höre die CD heute Abend."

Deniz: "Thank you very much, Frau Weber! I'll listen to the CD tonight."

Frau Weber: „Und wohin geht ihr heute?"

Frau Weber: "And where are you going today?"

Deniz: „Zur Berufsmesse. Das Thema ist: Berufe und Ausbildung. Es gibt über hundert Stände."

Deniz: "To the job fair. The topic is: jobs and training. There are more than a hundred stands."

Frau Weber: „Wie schön! Ein Beruf ist wichtig im Leben. Ohne Arbeit ist das Leben langweilig, glaube ich."

Frau Weber: "How nice! A job is important in life. Without work life is boring, I think."

Frau Weber: „Ach, und der Nachbar raucht wieder eine Zigarette im Treppenhaus. Jeden Morgen eine Zigarette vor der Tür! Das ist nicht gesund."

Frau Weber: "Oh, and the neighbour is smoking a cigarette in the stairwell again. Every morning a cigarette in front of the door! That's not healthy."

Lukas: „Mama, das ist heute nicht unser Thema."

Lukas: "Mum, that's not our topic today."

Das Handy klingelt. Es ist Elif.

The mobile phone rings. It's Elif.

Elif: „Hallo Deniz! Bist du fertig?"

Elif: "Hi Deniz! Are you ready?"

Deniz: „Fast. Ich habe gerade meinen Lebenslauf gedruckt."

Deniz: "Almost. I just printed my CV."

Elif: „Sehr gut. Und hast du das Formular für die Anmeldung ausgefüllt?"

Elif: "Very good. And did you fill in the registration form?"

Deniz: „Ja, aber ich hatte ein Problem. Sie wollten meine Telefonnummer mit der Vorwahl."

Deniz: "Yes, but I had a problem. They wanted my phone number with the area code."

Elif: „Die Vorwahl von Köln ist 0221."

Elif: "The area code for Cologne is 0221."

Deniz: „Das weiß ich jetzt. Gestern habe ich die Information angerufen, und eine Frau hat mir eine Auskunft gegeben."

Deniz: "I know that now. Yesterday I called information, and a woman gave me the information I needed."

Elif: „In der Halle gibt es auch einen Stand für Information und Auskunft."

Elif: "In the hall there's also a stand for information and enquiries."

Deniz: „Und wie war deine Prüfung am Donnerstag?"

Deniz: "And how was your exam on Thursday?"

Elif: „Ich habe bestanden! Der Text war leicht, und ich hatte Glück."

Elif: "I passed! The text was easy, and I was lucky."

Deniz: „Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Das ist super."

Deniz: "Congratulations! That's great."

Deniz: „Herr Schneider hat im Kurs eine Aussage gemacht. Diese Aussage vergesse ich nie: Ein gutes Gespräch ist besser als hundert Formulare."

Deniz: "Herr Schneider made a statement in the course. I'll never forget that statement: one good conversation is better than a hundred forms."

Elif: „Da hat er recht. Heute machen wir viele Gespräche. Bis gleich am Bahnhof!"

Elif: "He's right about that. Today we'll have lots of conversations. See you soon at the station!"

Deniz steht vor dem Schrank. Er weiß nicht, was er anziehen soll. Lukas sitzt auf dem Bett und trinkt Tee.

Deniz stands in front of the wardrobe. He doesn't know what to put on. Lukas sits on the bed drinking tea.

Deniz: „Lukas, was ziehe ich an? Das lila Hemd oder das dunkelblaue?"

Deniz: "Lukas, what should I wear? The purple shirt or the dark blue one?"

Lukas: „Nimm das dunkelblaue Hemd. Das lila Hemd ist für die Disco, nicht für eine Messe."

Lukas: "Take the dark blue shirt. The purple shirt is for the disco, not for a fair."

Deniz: „Und diese Jacke? Sie ist orange."

Deniz: "And this jacket? It's orange."

Lukas: „Sie ist zu bunt. Und ehrlich gesagt ist sie hässlich."

Lukas: "It's too colourful. And honestly, it's ugly."

Deniz: „Danke, du bist ein guter Freund."

Deniz: "Thanks, you're a good friend."

Lukas: „Nimm die graue Jacke. Der Pullover darunter ist zu dünn, aber es sind nur zwölf Grad, also nimm den dicken Pullover. Er ist warm."

Lukas: "Take the grey jacket. The pullover underneath is too thin, but it's only twelve degrees, so take the thick pullover. It's warm."

Deniz: „Und welche Schuhe? Der schwarze Schuh hat leider ein Loch."

Deniz: "And which shoes? Unfortunately the black shoe has a hole."

Lukas: „Dann nimm die braunen. Welche Größe hast du?"

Lukas: "Then take the brown ones. What size are you?"

Deniz: „Größe 44. Bei den braunen Schuhen ist die Größe perfekt."

Deniz: "Size 44. In the brown shoes the size is perfect."

Deniz packt seine Tasche: den Lebenslauf, ein Buch, Wasser und einen Regenschirm.

Deniz packs his bag: the CV, a book, water and an umbrella.

Lukas: „Was hast du alles in der Tasche? Sie hat ein Gewicht wie ein kleines Auto!"

Lukas: "What have you got in that bag? It weighs as much as a small car!"

Deniz: „Das Gewicht ist wirklich zu hoch. Okay, das Buch bleibt hier."

Deniz: "The weight really is too much. Okay, the book stays here."

Das Handy klingelt wieder. Es ist Mia.

The phone rings again. It's Mia.

Mia: „Hi Deniz. Ich kann heute leider nicht mitkommen."

Mia: "Hi Deniz. Unfortunately I can't come along today."

Deniz: „Oh, warum nicht?"

Deniz: "Oh, why not?"

Mia: „Ich habe Fieber. 38,5 Grad. Mein Kopf tut weh, und mein Bauch tut auch weh."

Mia: "I have a fever. 38.5 degrees. My head hurts, and my stomach hurts too."

Deniz: „Das tut mir leid. Gute Besserung! Ich bringe dir einen Prospekt mit."

Deniz: "I'm sorry. Get well soon! I'll bring you a brochure."

Um halb zehn stehen Deniz und Elif am Bahnhof. Der Fahrkartenautomat ist kaputt.

At half past nine Deniz and Elif are at the station. The ticket machine is broken.

Elif: „Der Automat nimmt kein Geld. Wir müssen zum anderen Automaten gehen."

Elif: "The machine doesn't take money. We have to go to the other machine."

Deniz: „Da ist noch ein Automat, neben dem Kiosk."

Deniz: "There's another machine, next to the kiosk."

Am Kiosk kauft Elif eine Zeitung. Dann fahren sie mit der Bahn. Die Türen öffnen automatisch. Draußen regnet es immer noch. Sie fahren an einer Bäckerei, an einem Schwimmbad und an einer alten Disco vorbei.

At the kiosk Elif buys a newspaper. Then they take the train. The doors open automatically. Outside it's still raining. They pass a bakery, a swimming pool and an old disco.

Zehn Minuten später sind sie da. Die Messe ist in Halle 6. Die Halle ist riesig und von außen ein bisschen hässlich, aber innen ist alles modern und hell.

Ten minutes later they're there. The fair is in Hall 6. The hall is huge and a bit ugly from the outside, but inside everything is modern and bright.

Am Eingang steht ein Tisch. Eine freundliche Dame gibt ihnen ein Formular.

There's a table at the entrance. A friendly lady gives them a form.

Die Dame: „Guten Tag! Bitte schreiben Sie hier Ihren Namen und Ihre Adresse. Und hier oben die Anrede."

The lady: "Good day! Please write your name and your address here. And the salutation up here."

Deniz: „Entschuldigung, was bedeutet Anrede?"

Deniz: "Excuse me, what does 'Anrede' mean?"

Die Dame: „Die Anrede ist Herr oder Frau. Und daneben kreuzen Sie an: männlich oder weiblich."

The lady: "The salutation is Mr or Mrs. And next to it you tick: male or female."

Deniz: „Ah, klar. Also Herr Deniz, männlich."

Deniz: "Ah, of course. So Mr Deniz, male."

Elif: „Und ich: Frau Demir, weiblich."

Elif: "And me: Ms Demir, female."

Die Dame: „Danke schön. Herzlich willkommen auf der Berufsmesse! Der Herr dort am Stand gibt Ihnen einen Plan."

The lady: "Thank you. A warm welcome to the job fair! The gentleman over there at the stand will give you a map."

In der Halle ist es laut. Über dem Eingang hängt ein großes Schild: „Herzlich willkommen!" Durch die Fenster im Dach scheint jetzt endlich die Sonne. Der Regen hat aufgehört.

It's loud in the hall. Above the entrance hangs a big sign: "A warm welcome!" Through the windows in the roof the sun is finally shining. The rain has stopped.

Am Informationsstand arbeitet eine junge Angestellte. Sie gibt ihnen einen Plan und einen Kaffee.

A young employee works at the information stand. She gives them a map and a coffee.

Die Angestellte: „Um zwölf Uhr gibt es eine Führung durch die Halle. Die Führung dauert eine Stunde. Möchten Sie mitmachen?"

The employee: "At twelve o'clock there's a guided tour through the hall. The tour lasts an hour. Would you like to take part?"

Deniz: „Ja, gern. Kann man einfach mitkommen?"

Deniz: "Yes, gladly. Can we just come along?"

Die Angestellte: „Klar. Kommen Sie um zwölf Uhr hierher. Und nehmen Sie den Plan mit, sonst finden Sie die Stände nicht."

The employee: "Of course. Come here at twelve. And take the map with you, otherwise you won't find the stands."

Deniz und Elif gehen langsam durch die Halle. Links steht ein Verein aus Köln.

Deniz and Elif walk slowly through the hall. On the left there's a club from Cologne.

Deniz: „Was macht dieser Verein?"

Deniz: "What does this club do?"

Elif: „Der Verein macht kulturelle Projekte für junge Leute: Konzerte, Theater, Musik."

Elif: "The club runs cultural projects for young people: concerts, theatre, music."

Deniz: „Kann man da mitmachen?"

Deniz: "Can you join in?"

Elif: „Natürlich. Man kann auch Freunde mitbringen."

Elif: "Of course. You can bring friends along too."

Rechts steht die Feuerwehr. Ein großes rotes Auto steht in der Halle. Ein Mann erklärt Kindern, was man bei Feuer machen muss.

On the right stands the fire brigade. A big red truck is in the hall. A man explains to children what to do in case of fire.

Neben der Feuerwehr steht die Polizei. Ein Polizist steht dort mit einem Hund. Der Hund ist groß und dunkel und sehr ruhig.

Next to the fire brigade is the police. A police officer stands there with a dog. The dog is big and dark and very calm.

Etwas weiter gibt es einen Stand mit Bäumen und Blumen. Es riecht gut.

A bit further on there's a stand with trees and flowers. It smells good.

Die Frau am Stand: „Wir suchen junge Leute für den Garten- und Landschaftsbau. Man arbeitet draußen, mit Bäumen und Blumen. Wir machen auch Gärten am See."

The woman at the stand: "We're looking for young people for landscape gardening. You work outside, with trees and flowers. We also make gardens by the lake."

Deniz: „Ein Baum, eine Blume, frische Luft. Das klingt gut. Aber bei zwölf Grad und Regen?"

Deniz: "A tree, a flower, fresh air. That sounds good. But at twelve degrees and in the rain?"

Die Frau am Stand: „Im Sommer ist es schöner. Unser Team fährt jedes Jahr ans Meer und macht dort einen Park."

The woman at the stand: "It's nicer in summer. Our team goes to the sea every year and builds a park there."

Plötzlich sieht Deniz einen bekannten Mann auf der anderen Seite der Halle.

Suddenly Deniz sees a familiar man on the other side of the hall.

Deniz: „Elif, da hinten ist Herr Schneider! Siehst du ihn?"

Deniz: "Elif, Herr Schneider is over there! Do you see him?"

Elif: „Wo denn? Hier sind hundert Leute."

Elif: "Where? There are a hundred people here."

Deniz: „Beim blauen Stand. Er ist groß und hat kurze braune Haare. Er hat ein rundes Gesicht und eine Brille."

Deniz: "By the blue stand. He's tall and has short brown hair. He has a round face and glasses."

Elif: „Ich sehe drei Männer mit Brille."

Elif: "I see three men with glasses."

Deniz: „Er ist nicht dick und nicht dünn. Er trägt ein weißes Hemd und eine rosa Krawatte."

Deniz: "He's not fat and not thin. He's wearing a white shirt and a pink tie."

Elif: „Eine rosa Krawatte? Jetzt sehe ich ihn. Die Krawatte ist wirklich hässlich."

Elif: "A pink tie? Now I see him. That tie really is ugly."

Deniz: „Und neben ihm steht eine Frau mit langen blonden Haaren. Ihr Haar ist ganz hell."

Deniz: "And next to him there's a woman with long blonde hair. Her hair is very light."

Elif: „Die Frau im lila Kleid?"

Elif: "The woman in the purple dress?"

Deniz: „Genau. Komm, wir sagen Hallo."

Deniz: "Exactly. Come on, let's say hello."

Herr Schneider sieht Deniz und lacht.

Herr Schneider sees Deniz and laughs.

Herr Schneider: „Guten Tag, Herr Deniz! Guten Tag, Frau Demir! Sie sind also auch hier."

Herr Schneider: "Good day, Mr Deniz! Good day, Ms Demir! So you're here too."

Deniz: „Guten Tag, Herr Schneider. Ja, wir suchen Informationen über Berufe."

Deniz: "Good day, Herr Schneider. Yes, we're looking for information about jobs."

Herr Schneider: „Sehr gut. Ich arbeite heute hier am Stand der Sprachschule. Und wofür interessieren Sie sich?"

Herr Schneider: "Very good. Today I'm working here at the language school stand. And what are you interested in?"

Deniz: „Ich interessiere mich für Technik. Und ein bisschen für Computer."

Deniz: "I'm interested in technology. And a bit in computers."

Herr Schneider: „Dann gehen Sie zu Halle 6, Reihe C. Dort sind die Handwerker und die Techniker."

Herr Schneider: "Then go to Hall 6, row C. That's where the craftspeople and technicians are."

Am Stand C1 steht ein Mann mit einer Maschine auf dem Tisch.

At stand C1 a man is standing with a machine on the table.

Der Mann am Stand: „Guten Tag! Interessieren Sie sich für Technik?"

The man at the stand: "Good day! Are you interested in technology?"

Deniz: „Ja, ich interessiere mich sehr für Technik. Was macht ein Techniker genau?"

Deniz: "Yes, I'm very interested in technology. What exactly does a technician do?"

Der Mann am Stand: „Ein Techniker repariert Maschinen und Computer. Er sucht den Fehler und findet eine Lösung. Mein Kollege dort ist Mechaniker. Er arbeitet nur an Autos."

The man at the stand: "A technician repairs machines and computers. He looks for the fault and finds a solution. My colleague over there is a mechanic. He only works on cars."

Deniz: „Was für eine Ausbildung braucht man dafür?"

Deniz: "What kind of training do you need for that?"

Der Mann am Stand: „Man macht eine Ausbildung, drei Jahre. Man ist Auszubildender in einer Firma und geht zweimal pro Woche in die Berufsschule."

The man at the stand: "You do an apprenticeship, three years. You're a trainee in a company and go to vocational school twice a week."

Elif: „Und danach?"

Elif: "And after that?"

Der Mann am Stand: „Viele Handwerker arbeiten später selbstständig. Selbstständig sein ist schwer, aber man ist sein eigener Chef."

The man at the stand: "Many craftspeople become self-employed later. Being self-employed is hard, but you're your own boss."

Am nächsten Stand steht eine Frau in weißer Kleidung. Über ihr hängt ein Foto von einem Krankenhaus.

At the next stand a woman in white clothing is standing. Above her hangs a photo of a hospital.

Die Frau am Stand: „Wir suchen Krankenpfleger und Krankenpflegerinnen. Ich arbeite als Krankenpflegerin, seit zwölf Jahren."

The woman at the stand: "We're looking for nurses, male and female. I've worked as a nurse for twelve years."

Deniz: „Was macht ein Krankenpfleger den ganzen Tag?"

Deniz: "What does a nurse do all day?"

Die Frau am Stand: „Ein Krankenpfleger hilft den Patienten, gibt Medikamente und misst Fieber. Wenn jemand Schmerzen hat, sind wir da. Man muss freundlich sein, auch um vier Uhr nachts."

The woman at the stand: "A nurse helps the patients, gives medication and takes temperatures. When someone is in pain, we're there. You have to be friendly, even at four in the morning."

In Reihe D riecht es nach Brot und Suppe. Hier sind das Hotel und die Gastronomie.

In row D it smells of bread and soup. This is the hotel and catering area.

Der Koch: „Hallo! Möchten Sie Koch werden? Ein Koch steht acht oder zehn Stunden in der Küche. Es ist heiß, es ist stressig, aber es macht Spaß."

The cook: "Hello! Would you like to become a cook? A cook stands in the kitchen for eight or ten hours. It's hot, it's stressful, but it's fun."

Deniz: „Und ein Kellner?"

Deniz: "And a waiter?"

Der Koch: „Der Kellner arbeitet vorne bei den Gästen. Ein guter Kellner hat ein gutes Gedächtnis und ein freundliches Gesicht. Mein Bruder ist Kellner in einem Hotel am See."

The cook: "The waiter works out front with the guests. A good waiter has a good memory and a friendly face. My brother is a waiter in a hotel by the lake."

Der Bäcker: „Und ich bin Bäcker. Ich stehe um drei Uhr auf. Meine Bäckerei ist um halb sechs offen. Aber um zwei Uhr nachmittags habe ich frei."

The baker: "And I'm a baker. I get up at three o'clock. My bakery opens at half past five. But at two in the afternoon I'm free."

An einem großen bunten Stand sind die Medien und die Kultur.

At a big colourful stand there's media and culture.

Die Journalistin: „Ich arbeite als Journalistin bei einer Zeitung hier in Köln."

The journalist: "I work as a journalist for a newspaper here in Cologne."

Deniz: „Was macht ein Journalist den ganzen Tag?"

Deniz: "What does a journalist do all day?"

Die Journalistin: „Ein Journalist telefoniert, führt Gespräche, schreibt einen Text und schreibt ihn noch einmal. Und dann kommt der Chef und findet einen Fehler."

The journalist: "A journalist makes phone calls, has conversations, writes a text and then writes it again. And then the boss comes along and finds a mistake."

Elif: „Und die anderen Berufe hier?"

Elif: "And the other jobs here?"

Die Journalistin: „Hier links sitzt ein Autor. Er schreibt Bücher zu Hause, allein. Daneben ist ein Künstler mit seinen Bildern. Der Musiker dort spielt um drei Uhr, und danach singt eine Sängerin aus Bonn."

The journalist: "Over here on the left sits an author. He writes books at home, alone. Next to him is an artist with his pictures. The musician over there plays at three o'clock, and after that a singer from Bonn sings."

Deniz: „Und die Frau da? Sie ist sehr groß und sehr dünn."

Deniz: "And that woman? She's very tall and very thin."

Die Journalistin: „Das ist ein Model. Sie arbeitet für eine Firma aus Düsseldorf. Und der Mann neben ihr ist Schauspieler, er spielt im Theater."

The journalist: "That's a model. She works for a company from Düsseldorf. And the man next to her is an actor, he acts in the theatre."

Ein älterer Mann kommt zum Stand und lacht.

An older man comes to the stand and laughs.

Der ältere Mann: „Ich bin Rentner. Vierzig Jahre war ich Kaufmann in einer Firma, immer im Büro, immer am Telefon. Jetzt bin ich Babysitter für meine Enkel. Das ist der schönste Beruf."

The older man: "I'm a pensioner. For forty years I was a businessman in a company, always in the office, always on the phone. Now I'm a babysitter for my grandchildren. That's the best job of all."

Deniz: „Und wie war die Arbeit als Kaufmann?"

Deniz: "And how was the work as a businessman?"

Der ältere Mann: „Nicht schlecht. Ein Kaufmann kauft, verkauft und rechnet. Mein Sohn ist auch Angestellter in einem Büro. Aber am Ende zählt: Die Arbeit muss dir gefallen."

The older man: "Not bad. A businessman buys, sells and calculates. My son is an office employee too. But in the end what counts is: you have to like the work."

Um vier Uhr sind Deniz und Elif müde. Ihre Füße tun weh. Sie gehen in ein Café neben der Halle. Draußen scheint jetzt die Sonne, und vor dem Fenster steht ein großer Baum.

At four o'clock Deniz and Elif are tired. Their feet hurt. They go into a café next to the hall. Outside the sun is shining now, and in front of the window stands a big tree.

Der Kellner: „Guten Tag. Was möchten Sie trinken?"

The waiter: "Good day. What would you like to drink?"

Elif: „Ich hätte gern einen Tee, bitte. Und ein Wasser."

Elif: "I'd like a tea, please. And a water."

Deniz: „Für mich einen Kaffee, bitte. Aber mit Zucker! Heute Morgen war mein Kaffee sehr bitter."

Deniz: "A coffee for me, please. But with sugar! This morning my coffee was very bitter."

Der Kellner: „Kein Problem. Zusammen oder getrennt?"

The waiter: "No problem. Together or separately?"

Elif: „Getrennt, bitte."

Elif: "Separately, please."

Sie legen die Prospekte auf den Tisch. Es sind viele: bunt, dick und schwer.

They put the brochures on the table. There are lots of them: colourful, thick and heavy.

Elif: „Also, Deniz. Welcher Beruf passt zu dir?"

Elif: "So, Deniz. Which job suits you?"

Deniz: „Ich weiß es nicht genau. Aber ich glaube, dass Technik gut zu mir passt. Ich repariere gern Dinge. In Istanbul habe ich immer die Computer repariert."

Deniz: "I don't know exactly. But I think technology suits me. I like repairing things. In Istanbul I always repaired the computers."

Elif: „Das stimmt, du hast auch mein Handy repariert. Und Koch?"

Elif: "That's true, you repaired my phone too. And cook?"

Deniz: „Nein. Ich kann kochen, aber nicht acht Stunden lang. Und Bäcker? Um drei Uhr aufstehen – nie im Leben."

Deniz: "No. I can cook, but not for eight hours. And baker? Getting up at three — never in my life."

Elif: „Und Friseur? Du hast schöne Haare."

Elif: "And hairdresser? You have nice hair."

Deniz: „Mein Cousin ist Friseur in Istanbul! Er hat einen kleinen Salon. Er ist selbstständig und arbeitet sechs Tage pro Woche."

Deniz: "My cousin is a hairdresser in Istanbul! He has a small salon. He's self-employed and works six days a week."

Elif: „Wirklich? Erzähl mal von deiner Familie."

Elif: "Really? Tell me about your family."

Deniz: „Also, mein Onkel ist Mechaniker. Er arbeitet seit dreißig Jahren an Autos. Meine Tante war Lehrerin, jetzt ist sie Rentnerin. Sie hat vier Enkel."

Deniz: "Well, my uncle is a mechanic. He's been working on cars for thirty years. My aunt was a teacher, now she's retired. She has four grandchildren."

Elif: „Vier Enkel! Und dein Cousin, ist er verheiratet?"

Elif: "Four grandchildren! And your cousin, is he married?"

Deniz: „Er war verheiratet. Jetzt ist er geschieden. Er und seine Frau sind seit zwei Jahren getrennt. Sie waren kein gutes Paar, glaube ich."

Deniz: "He was married. Now he's divorced. He and his wife have been separated for two years. They weren't a good couple, I think."

Deniz: „Aber jetzt geht es ihm gut. Er sagt, ein Ehepartner muss auch ein Freund sein. Und bei euch?"

Deniz: "But he's doing well now. He says a spouse also has to be a friend. And in your family?"

Elif: „Meine Eltern sind seit dreißig Jahren zusammen. Ein sehr ruhiges Paar. Meine Cousine arbeitet in Hamburg als Model, und ihr Ehepartner ist Polizist. Meine kleine Schwester arbeitet am Wochenende als Babysitterin bei unseren Nachbarn."

Elif: "My parents have been together for thirty years. A very calm couple. My cousin works in Hamburg as a model, and her spouse is a police officer. My little sister works as a babysitter for our neighbours at the weekend."

Elif: „Und was machst du jetzt konkret?"

Elif: "And what are you actually going to do now?"

Deniz: „Am Montag rufe ich die Firma aus Reihe C an. Ich frage nach einem Praktikum. Wenn das Praktikum gut läuft, mache ich vielleicht die Ausbildung als Techniker."

Deniz: "On Monday I'll call the company from row C. I'll ask about an internship. If the internship goes well, maybe I'll do the training as a technician."

Elif: „Sehr gut. Und schreib eine E-Mail, keine SMS. Mit Anrede: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren."

Elif: "Very good. And write an email, not a text message. With a salutation: Dear Sir or Madam."

Deniz: „Klar. Und am Ende: Mit herzlichen Grüßen."

Deniz: "Of course. And at the end: With warm regards."

Um sechs Uhr ist Deniz wieder zu Hause. Im Treppenhaus steht Frau Weber mit ihrem Hund.

At six o'clock Deniz is back home. Frau Weber is standing in the stairwell with her dog.

Frau Weber: „Da bist du ja! Und? Wie war die Messe?"

Frau Weber: "There you are! Well? How was the fair?"

Deniz: „Sehr gut! Die Halle war riesig. Ich habe mit einem Techniker, mit einer Krankenpflegerin, mit einem Koch und mit einem Journalisten gesprochen."

Deniz: "Very good! The hall was huge. I spoke with a technician, a nurse, a cook and a journalist."

Frau Weber: „Und was möchtest du werden?"

Frau Weber: "And what do you want to become?"

Deniz: „Techniker, glaube ich. Am Montag rufe ich an."

Deniz: "A technician, I think. On Monday I'll call."

Frau Weber: „Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Das ist eine gute Entscheidung. Mein Enkel wollte früher Sänger oder Schauspieler werden. Heute ist er Angestellter bei der Bahn und sehr zufrieden."

Frau Weber: "Congratulations! That's a good decision. My grandson used to want to be a singer or an actor. Today he's an employee at the railway and very happy."

Oben in der Wohnung sitzt Lukas vor dem Fernseher.

Upstairs in the flat Lukas is sitting in front of the television.

Lukas: „Na? Wie war es?"

Lukas: "So? How was it?"

Deniz: „Lang. Meine Füße tun weh, mein Bauch hat Hunger, und meine Tasche hat jetzt ein Gewicht wie zwei Autos. Aber es war ein guter Tag."

Deniz: "Long. My feet hurt, my stomach is hungry, and my bag now weighs as much as two cars. But it was a good day."

Lukas: „Und? Hast du eine Lösung gefunden?"

Lukas: "And? Did you find a solution?"

Deniz: „Vielleicht. Ich interessiere mich für Technik, und ein Techniker sucht Fehler und findet Lösungen. Das ist gut, denn ich mache selbst viele Fehler."

Deniz: "Maybe. I'm interested in technology, and a technician looks for mistakes and finds solutions. That's good, because I make a lot of mistakes myself."

Lukas: „Willkommen im Leben. Ich bin Kaufmann und mache jeden Tag Fehler. Komm, es gibt Pizza. Und danach hören wir deine neue CD."

Lukas: "Welcome to life. I'm a businessman and I make mistakes every day. Come on, there's pizza. And afterwards we'll listen to your new CD."
